Martha Haws – age 18 El Paso, Texas – 1912 Photo taken after Pancho Villa exiled the Mormons from the Colonies in Mexico. Martha and her family had lived in Pacheco, Chihuahua, Mexico. They stayed in El Paso before they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. She lived with her mother, Martha Barrett Haws and her twin sister Mary Haws [Prahl]. |

It was a cold bleak day. Snow had fallen to a depth of eight inches a few nights before, so my father's diary states. I am the sixteenth child of my father William Wallace Haws and the seventh child of my mother, Martha Barrett, who was the second wife of my father. Father was born the18 February1835 in Wayne Co., Illinois, the son of Gilbert and Hannah Whitcomb Haws. My mother, a twin, was born13 March 1859 at Pontepool, England. She is the youngest child of William Barrett and his second wife, Phoebe Colburn Barrett. My mother immigrated to Utah with her parents when she was a girl. The Haws family was among the early settlers of Provo, Utah in 1849. |
